Rag Rug Realities

Recycling is important! That’s why we’re proud to feature recycled Cotton and Cotton-Blend material in our Recycled Rag Rug Kits and Rag Bags. Crocheting cloth, however, is a little different than crocheting yarn, and because we’re using recycled fabrics, color and pattern variations are to be expected. Below are a few facts and tips to keep in mind as you set about creating your own uniquely colorful, practical Recycled Rag Rug.

Crocheting Recycled Fabrics

True to their name, our Recycled Rag Rugs are made from “rags,” strips of recycled Cotton and Cotton-Blends that you crochet like yarn. Crocheting fabric, however, requires a larger hook than you’d use for yarn, and you have to pull a bit further to tighten the knots and to ensure that your finished rug will lay flat.

We include a “P”-size hook in each of our kits, which is ideal for working with the recycled material in our Rag Bags. The hook is made from hand carved wood that will last for a lifetime’s rug-making pleasure. Its sturdy long handle fits nicely in the hand and allows you to pull the material out away from yourself with relative ease.

Finished Rug Size

Our Recycled Rag Rug Kit comes with three Rag Bags of recycled fabric, enough to create a circular rug approximately 2.5 - 3 feet in diameter. The exact size and shape of your finished rug will vary somewhat, however, according to how tightly you make the knots as you work.

We offer our recycled Cotton and Cotton-Blend materials in a wide range of available colors:

White – Cream – Beige – Peach – Pink – Red – Orange – Yellow – Green – Light Blue – Dark Blue – Purple – Maroon – Brown – Black

We do our utmost to have all these colors on hand to stock our Custom Kits and Rag Bags, but the nature of the recycling business is such that we don’t have strict control over our sources of supply. A given color is likely to vary bag by bag in terms of shade and texture, and the fabric may be patterned rather than solid. There may also be those very rare times when a given color is temporarily out of stock and unavailable.

Our experienced designer has put together thousands of great color combinations using recycled materials. For folks who’ve ordered one of our “Designer’s Choice” kits, she’ll pick out an eye-catching combination of colors from our materials on hand. If you’ve ordered a Custom Kit, she’ll mix and match shades from stock according to your selection of colors. In the very rare case that she’s unable to match to your primary or alternate selections, she’ll contact you directly to work out another combination that will work for you.

Minimal Prep!

The recycled cotton and cotton-blend material in our kits comes freshly prepared for its new life as a Rag Rug. There’s very little you have to do to “prep” it before getting started. It comes ready to use as is.

We definitely DON’T recommend washing the material in your Rag Bags before using it to start your rug. It’s already clean as is, and the long strips might get tangled inside your washer or dryer. Instead – should you want to wash the fabric anyway - wait until you’ve finished your project to machine-wash and dry your new rug as a single piece.

Durability and Ease of Cleaning

It’s our experience that a Rag Rug made from recycled Cotton and Cotton-Blends will last and last through heavy traffic anywhere in the home. Our Rag Rugs are also machine-washable and easy to clean. Just toss them into your washer and dryer, and you’re good to go!
